Care guide

What is Sterling Silver?

Sterling silver is a metal containing at least 92.5% silver. This is the legal standard of purity set by the assay offices in Britain and used for most silver jewellery throughout the world. It means that the metal used is of a specific quality. Pure silver is never used, as it is too soft to be practical.

Sterling silver will tarnish with time and wear. To take care of your sterling silver jewellery, polish it frequently with a soft dry cloth to avoid tarnish (do not use silver dip). Ideally, use speciall impregnated silver polishing cloth to ensure that your jewellery continues to retain its original lustre and shine.

Why does my piece tarnish?

Tarnish is caused by a reaction with sulphur that naturally occurs in the air. Tarnished silver will turn a darkish grey-black colour and is most easily removed when it first becomes visible.

Sterling silver will naturally tarnish with exposure to the air, environment, perfumes, moisturisers, hairspray, soaps and perspiration etc. These are obviously a fact of life so regular cleaning will help keep your silver sparkling.

Day-to-day Care

  • To preserve the polish of your sterling silver jewelry, avoid exposure to household cleaning products, bleach and other strong chemicals. We recommend that you store your silver jewelry in jewellery boxes.
  • Make accessorising the last finishing touch – Select your jewellery after you have applied make-up, perfume and hairspray to avoid unnecessary contact with these chemicals.
  • Do not swim or shower in your jewellery.

How to Clean Silver Jewellery

1. Apply a small amount of silver jewelry cleaner to a soft cloth.
2. Gently rub the silver with the cloth several times.
3. Rinse the silver thoroughly in warm water.
4. Blot dry and shine your silver with a polishing cloth or mitts. This will remove the tarnish and restore shine.

Storing your Sterling Silver Jewellery

  • Sterling Silver loves somewhere cool, dark and moisture free to live.
  • Give your jewellery a little love with a silver polishing cloth after wearing and before putting away.
  • Fasten all of your chains to stop them getting tangled, always fasten any extender chains on the last hole.
  • Store your jewellery in an airtight jewellery box or even in little airtight ziplock bags or soft pouches and always separately as they can scratch each other.
